American Heritage Dictionary CD-ROM

SGML-to-ebook conversion

Working from the SGML-coded text in which the American Heritage Dictionary is stored, I designed a template and created a FrameMaker+SGML application that I used to format the third edition of the dictionary at a reduced page size for on-screen viewing. From the FrameMaker files, I created an Acrobat PDF file which was distributed as an added-value bonus for purchasers of the Glassbook e-book reader software. When the dictionary’s fourth edition was released, I created a redesigned PDF version of the new edition as well, for distribution on CD-ROM. When this project began I had no prior experience with SGML; during the course of the project I taught myself how to design EDDs for SGML import and how to work with and edit structured documents in FrameMaker+SGML.
